Of idols, thieves and the security net with a hole

Even as officials put in place an elaborate system to safeguard the precious idols, temple staff, who are uncared for, remain as vulnerable as ever

At a time when the Idol Wing-CID and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) are checking the antiquity of idols that are currently stored at the Icon Centre in Thiyagarajaswamy temple in Tiruvarur, the spotlight has turned on the plight of temple priests and other employees without whose help the exercise would not have been possible.

Somasundara Gurukkal, the priest of Thirukottaram temple, who was sitting outside the icon centre at the Thiyagarajaswamy temple in Thiruvarur on Friday, was one such man. As the bronze idols of his temple were being brought out one by one to be tested for their antiquity, Mr. Somasundara Gurukkal was visibly excited.

“This is Villendhivelan. Lord Muruga is holding a bow and such depiction could be seen in very few temples,” he said.

“Is this from your temple? Are you sure?” Inspector General Pon Manickavel, who heads the Idol Wing-CID, quizzed the priest.

“Yes. We have a Nataraja statue bigger than what is in the sanctum sanctorum of the Chidambaram temple,” Mr. Somasundara Gurukkal said with pride. He was here last year too to take out the idol during a festival. After the festival, the idols were returned to the centre as it was unsafe to keep them at the temple.

When Mr. Manickavel wanted to know who else had accompanied Mr. Somasundara Gurukkal, the guard of the temple, the accountant and the Executive Officer of the temple stepped forward.

“Are you convinced? Are the idols from your temple,” he asked and directed other officials of the Idol Wing to bring along local people too, particularly elders, to identify the idols.

“I have a reason to bring in the elders. At the Idumbeswarar temple near Kumbakonam, for instance, 77-year-old Sriram was shocked when he found the ancient Manickavasagar idol to have been replaced by a lookalike made just a few years ago,” he said.

Similarly, in Pandanallur, 62 idols in the Pasupatheeswarar temple constructed by Chola King Kulotunga-I, have been found to be of recent origin.

“Pandanallur is referred to as Viruthiraja Payankara Vazhanadu. The term speaks for its wealth. How could idols, less than 100 years old, gain entry into such an ancient temple,” wondered noted Archaeologist R. Nagaswamy.
Tapping technology

The verification of idols does not stop with identification by the priests and temple staff. In fact, two people could be seen vigorously cleaning up certain points on an idol before handing it over to the scientists of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic (IGCAR) from Kalpakkam. The IGCAR scientists, drafted to check the metal composition of the idols, in turn pressed their X-ray fluorescence analyser (XFR) on the cleaned spot for a few seconds and, as if by magic, information on various metals that had gone into making the idol flashed on the analyser.

“Copper is the major component. It is followed by tin, lead, zinc and traces of iron and phosphorus. In some cases, brass dominate the combination, which could mean the idols belong to a different period,” noted one of the scientists at work.

The readings of the XFR are immediately recorded, and they will be added to other details relating to the idol separately being collated by experts from the ASI.
Prodded by the court

All this flows from the directives of a Division Bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Justices R. Mahadevan and P.D. Adikesavalu, on a petition filed by Mr. Pon Manickavel.

“I am for three dimensional laser imaging technology since XLR has limited utility. I am also for inscribing details on the image. For instance, the name Suddhamalli mentioned on a Nataraja statue helped determine its place of origin,” said Mr. Manickavel, who is just one month away from his retirement.

Asked what purpose would the current exercise serve, he said it would go a long way in preventing theft and smuggling of the idols out of the country.

While the authorities have won plaudits for their dedication and drive, the priests and other temple staff, including the security personnel, continue to live a life of misery and neglect.

For instance, Mr. Somasundara Gurukkal receives a measly monthly salary of ₹790 apart from paddy measuring six kalam (a local measure, approximately 230 kg a year) after every harvest. The guard receives a monthly salary of ₹900 and the accountant ₹800. They also receive some paddy after harvest.

Left to fight for their survival, how motivated and equipped these temple staff would be to take on the criminal gangs that are said to operate on a global scale is the moot question.

Tamil Nadu Idol Wing: Fighting Against All Odds—And HR&CE

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu is notorious not only for its own malfunctioning but also for preventing other agencies from doing their job.

The early 1980s witnessed a spurt in the theft of panchaloha (five-metal) idols in Tamil Nadu. It left people agitated, resulting in the setting up of Tamil Nadu Idol Wing Police. The wing was set up under the Crime Branch’s Criminal Investigation Department, and in 2000, it was brought under the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

Many antique idols at Thanjavur Big Temple “missing or fake”

Many rare 11th century bronze idols in the more than 1000-year-old Brahadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, popularly known as the Big Temple, in Tamil Nadu could either be “missing” or “non-antique,” a euphemism for fake.
The Idol Wing of the Economic Offences unit of the CB-CID Police of Tamil Nadu, led by its IG of Police Pon. Manickavel came to this conclusion on the basis of its study of Tamil inscriptions on the stone walls and “vimana” (tower above the sanctum sanctorum) of the temple, which it then matched with the “historically dated” idols kept in the temple premises.
The Pon. Manickavel-led Idol Wing has been pursuing idol theft cases in the State since 2012, and the recovery of two icons of Raja Raja Chola (who built the Big Temple) and Lokamadevi in Ahmedabad this year brought the investigators to Thanjavur. “After restoring to the temple the two priceless icons of Raja Raja Chola, and his royal consort Lokamadevi from a private museum in Ahmedabad, we have decided to verify all other idols that are kept in the temple's custody today,” a senior officer with the Idol Wing told Frontline.
“Every detail about the temple’s physiological features was recorded as inscription in the temple. Hence we have been verifying the copied transcripts of those stone inscriptions and other supporting materials, including documents, past and present, to ascertain the fate of the bronze and other icons that were donated by the king, his family and public to the temple,” the officer said.
The investigation, he added, did not rule out the possibility that the rare icons had either been replaced or stolen. “We are not ruling out the possibility that this could have happened at various periods in the existence of the temple. However, the documents on the idols kept in the temple do not vouchsafe the antiquity of the idols. While many idols that have been recorded in stone inscriptions in the temple are missing, those that remain could be replicas that took the place of the originals during later periods,” the officer pointed out. “Even a majestic gold icon and four silver idols are missing from the temple,” he said.
The temple inventory should have 66 “historically dated idols” as per the inscriptions. R. Nagaswamy, former Director, Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department, in an interview to media, said that King Raja Rajan had, in stone inscriptions, specifically mentioned that he built this all-stone temple called “kattali” (“kal” meaning stone and “tali” a temple). The king’s inscription, running to 107 paragraphs, details the plan of the temple, the gifts he, his sister Kundavai, his queens and others gifted to the temple. It includes 66 bronze idols. “Even the measurements of these bronzes—from crown to toe, the number of arms they had and the symbols they held—are inscribed,” he said. Unfortunately, many have disappeared today.
The official pointed out that of the 66 historically dated idols, only 57 were recorded, and of them only 41 are found to be on the temple’s records today. “Most of the 41 are suspected to be fake, replaced with similar images,” he said. Among the historically recorded images, the missing ones include an idol of Kolgai Thevar in gold, weighing 83 “kalanju” (weight measurement of that era, equivalent to 1.77 gm), and four silver idols.
Sleuths of the Idol Wing claimed that barring one huge Panchaloha idol of Nataraja, weighing nearly half-a-tonne, the other idols needed close scrutiny. A record claimed that four Natarajar icons of temples located near Thanjavur were impounded at the Calcutta airport in 1974. One of these could be traced to a gallery in the United States. “We have sought the relevant documents from the Calcutta airport to trace the other three and to bring back the one in the U.S.,” he said.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), led by its Regional Director Nambirajan, carried out the antique verification process of the icons kept in the Big Temple using portable fluorescence spectrometers. The ASI team also checked the antiquity of idols belonging to the Sri Mariamman Temple and Sri Kailasanathar Temple, both at Punnainallur near Thanjavur, and concluded that some of them could have been replaced.
In the Pasupatheeshwarar temple in Pandanaluur, also in Thanjavur district, many later Chola bronzes are missing from the temple’s safe custody. Of 300-odd idols, 62 have been found to be fake, while 22 are missing. The Idol Wing has filed six First Information Reports (FIRs) and even arrested a few senior officials of the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department in this connection.
A staggering 273 FIRs on 1,106 missing idols have been filed so far. More than 1,000 idols from 387 temples across the State have been stolen in the last 25 years, according to the Idol Wing.

Wednesday, 26 Sep, 1.18 am

6 held with Panchaloha idols worth Rs 20 crore

CHENNAI: The Idol Wing of the Economic Offences Wing seized four panchaloha idols worth Rs 20 crore and arrested six persons in Sivaganga district on May 20. They were planning to sell the temple antiques abroad.
At a joint press conference, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Board Commissioner J Chandrakumar and Economic Offences Wing IGP Arumugam said two panchaloha idols of Shiva, as well as those of Parvati and Sivagami were found during renovation work carried out by the HR & CE at a Siva temple in Thiruvatchi village in Devakottai, Sivaganga district.
The ‘stapathi’ Nagaraj (40) hid the four idols and later enquired about its value from his friend Balakumar, who claimed that it could be around `20 crore.
Deciding to sell the antique idols, the duo approached the retired village administrative officer of Ilupur village near Pudukottai, Jayaraman, in this connection who offered to help them in selling the idols for a commission, officials said. On receiving a tip-off about the proposed plan, four special teams under DSP (Idol Wing) Selvaraj were formed and they intensified surveillance in the area. On May 20, when the special teams were conducting vehicular checks at Devakottai, they intercepted a car.
A search of the vehicle yielded the four panchaloha idols. The occupants of the car Nagaraj and his associates Balakumar (39), Gopal (29), Kannan (29), Kulandaivelu (44) and Muthukumar (20) were arrested.
A hunt was on to nab six others including retired Village Adminstrative Officer (VAO) Jayaraman, the IGP said. The idols were handed over to the HR&CE chief, who said that CCTVs and alarm bells had been installed in 38,491 temples and a special cell had been set up to protect idols.
He added that a special report on the issue of idol thefts had been prepared by the board and it would be submitted to the State government soon.
Rules for Temple Fests
In view of the increasing number of accidents during temple chariot festivals, Chandrakumar said the temple committees must secure a clearance certificate from the Public Works Department about the safety of the chariots three months before the event.
There were 987 chariots and 278 of them were being maintained by the board. “We have sent a circular containing 34 rules to the district collectors and temple managements,” he said.
“The chariot processions must be conducted between 6 am and 6 pm and not during the night,” he added.
